Building a Future in Fishing: Joe Archambault’s Story

Writer's picture: Bella DziakBella Dziak

Joe Archambault is a 2024 Deckhand to Captain Graduate and a seasoned fisherman of lobster and groundfish. Joe founded Portsmouth Trap in 2017, providing top-quality traps for fellow fishermen. Diversifying his fishing business has allowed him to stay involved in supporting the fishing community in his off-season. Joe is also dedicated to collaborative research with the UNH Sea Grant project at the Aqua Fort. Through this project, he harvested steelhead trout alongside Ward Byrne, Captain of FV Sugar Daddy.

Joe is not only an incredible fisherman but a devoted father of three. His dedication to his industry, family, and the DTC program has showcased Joe's integrity and passion for the success of his business as an owner-operator. Joe’s hard work has made him an invaluable part of the DTC Training.

Upon reflection, Joe shared: "The training program taught me more about fishing than just jumping on a boat and heading out, which I was used to". One of the most impactful sections of the program was the portion focused on business plan development and practices. The business management and planning portion of the training program was led by our partners at the Regional Economic Development Center (REDC). The REDC had an advisor assigned to our trainees to help them build their business plan step by step and was available to answer questions and help them along the way.

The topics taught during the business management and planning portion include

  • Developing a Budget

  • Financing opportunities and financing qualification counseling

  • Exploring diversification opportunities in the fishing industry business model

  • Permitting and boating cost analysis

  • Tax requirements for business ownership

  • Boat surveying and cost analysis

Joe’s dedication to both the fishing industry and his growth exemplifies what the DTC program is all about. We're incredibly proud of Joe and our 2024 trainees for their comradery, commitment, and passion for their industry and self-growth.

Our fishermen aren’t in this industry because it’s easy—they’re here because they love what they do. It’s inspiring to see Joe and others dedicate themselves to improving their craft and building a sustainable future.

Congrats Joe! We can't wait to see you continue to succeed.
