Greenhorn Apprenticeship

Prepare for your career in the small-boat commercial fishing industry in New England

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

This annual apprenticeship program is a hands-on workforce training initiative launched in March 2026 to help rebuild and strengthen the next generation of small-boat commercial fishermen in New England.

Rooted in the traditions of the region’s working waterfronts, the program addresses a critical challenge facing the fishing industry: the “graying of the fleet” and the growing shortage of young, trained deckhands entering the trade. By combining immersive field experience with structured education, the apprenticeship creates a direct pathway for apprentices to build meaningful, sustainable careers on the water.

This is a hands-on, 5-week program for individuals ready to launch their career on local commercial fishing vessels in New England. Participants receive instruction in core areas such as seamanship, gear handling, and deck operations, while also learning the essential safety, navigation, and survival skills required to work in the demanding offshore environments.

Whether you’re drawn to lobstering, scalloping, groundfishing, tuna fishing, or simply want to gain real experience working on the water, this training will equip you with the essential skills and confidence to find employment in the industry.
