 About the Program

This program is designed for experienced commercial fishermen who want to take the next step toward owning and operating their own vessel. It is open to applicants from Southern Maine, New Hampshire, and Northern Massachusetts.

Why Apply? Program Benefits

  • Free Training – Learn everything needed to run a fishing business.

  • $5,000 Stipend – Given upon successful completion and approval of a business plan.

  • Mentor Stipend – Your mentor will also receive a $2,000 stipend.

  • USCG-Approved Safety & Survival Training – Includes a 2-day Drill Conductor course (FREE).

Who Can Apply? 

Must have at least 3 years of commercial fishing experience
✔ Must be serious about becoming an owner-operator
✔ Must be committed to attending in-person classes in Portsmouth, NH

This program focuses on the business side of commercial fishing—teaching you the finance, regulations, and ownership skills needed to successfully own and operate your own fishing vessel as a business. It does not include hands-on captain training or vessel operation.

Program Requirements & Schedule​

  • Location: Carey Cottage, Portsmouth, NH

  • Classes: Every other Monday, 6:00 – 8:00 PM

  • Dates: Mid-April to mid-December.

  • Commitment:

    • 50 hours of classroom learning (2 - 2.5 hour classes every other week)

    • 15 hours of research and/or advocacy work

    • 2-day Safety & Survival Training (USCG-approved)
